André Pappathomas - Areuh
This project is a study on the musicality of languages, staging and setting to music six languages chosen for their distinctive musicality: Chinese, Arabic, Italian, Haitian Creole, Hebrew and Swahili. One or two representatives from each of these communities form a small vocal ensemble whose songs are built around a shared text translated into each of the languages present... From this choral and musical configuration unfolds a whole series of vocal and musical pieces, supported by a selection of instruments tied to these various cultures: the guzheng, the oud, the kora, the zumari and an array of wind and percussion instruments. A quartet of soloists from the worlds of musique actuelle and contemporary music infuses the ensemble, through the use of phonemes, with consonances freed from geographic or religious references.
