Artists Residencies

Beyond its programming and thanks to its unique home where meetings and exchanges can be held, Le Vivier contributes to advancing the practice of new music by developing partnerships at the local, national and international levels and by offering residency projects, mentorship and research-creation.

Since 2014, many exchanges and artist residencies have taken place providing support to composers and performers in their music creation projects and promoting dissemination and synergy in new music among the public and presenters in different regions. Over the years, we have observed that these residencies and exchange projects have made it possible to create lasting links that go far beyond the initial projects.

Quebec-Dresden

Composer and Workshop Residency Exchanges Québec-Dresden

Since 2015 the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, Le Goethe-Institut Montréal, and Le Vivier – The Crossroads of New Music, has had a partnership agreement with HELLERAU - European Center for the Arts Dresden to create a program for the exchange of creative residencies in music. In these exchanges, a Quebec composer can stay for two months in Dresden at the HELLERAU - European Center for the Arts Dresden. In return, a German composer is hosted in Montreal, Quebec, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Montreal and Le Vivier. The residency allows compsers to experience an important period in their professional development. A new living environment and frequent contact with other artists create favorable conditions for the development of creativity and the evolution of artistic approaches. It may even influence the development of an international career. The workshops aim to establish lasting links and to allow for different points of view between Quebec and German composers, thus contributing to the development of their artistic endeavors. It also helps promote dissemination of works by the chosen composers in both Quebec and Germany.

Quebec-Colombia

Artist and workshop residency exchanges Quebec-Colombia

This residency is a collaboration between Le Vivier and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec in line with its desire to continue developing lasting ties with Latin American countries. In 2010, CALQ concluded a reciprocity agreement of with the Colombian Ministry of Culture aimed at developing an artistic residency program between the two countries.

Through this agreement, Colombian and Québec artists will be able to carry out a two-month residency in Quebec or Colombia and take advantage of the many opportunities for making professional contacts that help in developing a career.

The objectives of this workshop-residency are to support and stimulate creators by providing them with an environment and the appropriate means for the production and dissemination of their works. It will also foster the artistic renewal of artists and writers by providing access to a new and stimulating cultural environment. The residency will allow for the exchange of artistic or literary points of view and contribute to the establishment of lasting links between creators in Quebec and those from abroad. It will also promote the work and career development of Quebec artists abroad and develop new networks for artistic creation, production and dissemination.

Creation and diffusion residency in new music

Since 2016, the Conseil des arts de Montréal and the Accès culture network have joined forces with Groupe Le Vivier to increase encounters between Montreal audiences and new music. Their actions aim to make new music better known and appreciated by a wider audience.

The residency allows a new music organization, a member of Le Vivier, to design and refine a concert program that includes the creation of a new work by an up-and-coming composer. During the residency in different boroughs of the City, the artists carry out audience development and cultural mediation activities in collaboration with the presenters concerned.

Audience development activities are supported by the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications and the Ville de Montréal as part of the Entente sur le développement culturel de Montréal.

This project aims to make new music known and demystified to a broader audience. To encourage the musical creation of emerging Montréal composers and the creation of new music concerts by Montréal ensembles. Create links between community organizations and presenters in the Accès culture network.

Québec–Huddersfield

Composer-performer residency exchanges between Quebec and Huddersfield

Le Vivier – The Crossroads of New Music – and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (hcmf //), with support from the Coopération culturelle Québec – British Council program, initiated a one-month new music creation residency for a Québéc composer-performer in Huddersfield and, in return, a British composer-performer hosted at Le Vivier in Montreal.

This exchange allows the laureates to devote time to music creation in a professional setting. It is also an opportunity to discover new living environments and meet other artists and stakeholders in the artistic world.

These residencies contribute to the development of creativity and the evolution of artistic approaches and may even help in the development of an international career.

The residency in Huddersfield is just one part of developing lasting links and exchanges between Québec and British composer-performers. It also contributes to the dissemination of works by the selected composer-performers in both Québec and the UK.

The Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival

The hcmf // is the UK's largest international festival for new and experimental music. It spans 10 days featuring around 50 events including concerts, music theater, dance, multi-media, lectures and films. The hcmf // which is in residence at the University of Huddersfield, seeks to provide: unique and memorable artistic experiences to as wide an audience as possible; to be an international platform for new music and related contemporary art forms in Great Britain; to thrill its current audiences and attract new listeners through bold, informed programming and elegant presentation; and finally, to play the role of an active cultural partner in the region.
