Grounds of Memory - Bozzini & Dedalus

Grounds of Memory marks the poetic encounter between Emily Dickinson’ texts and performers Peyee Chen, the Dedalus Ensemble, and the Bozzini Quartet.

The Bozzini Quartet, the Dedalus Ensemble and Berlin-based soprano Peyee Chen come together to offer a meditative performance. Jürg Frey writes calm, vast, masterful soundscapes. With his keen ear for colour, sound, and precision, he composes music of great serenity and lyricism; a poetic weightlessness, in search of silence in sound. Here is how the composer describes some of the work's passages: sounds of nature, dancing clouds, suspended sounds, passacaglia and slow waltz.

Swiss composer Jürg Frey's Grounds of Memory, written for Quatuor Bozzini, Ensemble Dedalus and Peyee Chen, is based on texts by Arakida Moritake, Jürg Frey, and Emily Dickinson, specifically Dickinson’s recently published "envelope poems”. This collection, The Gorgeous Nothing, includes handwritten fragments, brief thoughts, and drafts of poems written by hand on specially-prepared used envelopes, made up of scattered words, word clouds, and first stanzas of poems. These poems, along with other poems by Emily Dickinson, freely inspire and provide a foundation for the composition. The selection of texts and poems touches on an existential sensibility and evokes the vision of an infinite path.
