The Ventapane duo (Martin Karlicek on piano and Mana Shiraishi on violin) and mezzo-soprano Marie-Annick Béliveau present works from Japan and Canada, including a song cycle by composer Elliot Weingerber inspired by the poems of English writer Thomas Hardy.

This concert showcases the variety of timbres and colors of the instruments and features a solo piano work by Kentaro Taki, a pioneer of classical music in Japan, and a violin sonata by Canadian composer Stewart Grant. The highlight of the concert, As We Stood Then by Canadian composer Elliot Weingerber, combines Weingerber's Japanese experience with the traditions of Western classical music in a five-song cycle based on poems by Thomas Hardy. The program is complemented by works by Sandeep Bhagwati and Erwin Schulhoff.
