Vergil Sharkya' is an Austrian-born composer, sound explorer and multimedia artist specialising in immersive experiences. He holds a master's degree in composition and music theory from the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna. He spent 15 years in Liverpool (UK), where he completed a doctorate in composition at Liverpool John Moores University, before joining the Montreal artistic community in 2010. His interests include the creation of immersive works, collaborative multimedia and mixed-media projects, as well as experimental and improvised music (musique actuelle).

Vergil's music combines composition, hypercomposition and improvisation, played on synthesizers, computers and acoustic instruments. His sound worlds explore an aesthetic of immersive quality, a constant movement through networks and strata of micro-frequencies and shimmering, shimmering rhythms, tectonic collisions, explosions, implosions, fractures of sound masses made of high-density arrangements of canons of proportion and sonic modulations - a free dance through complex sonic architectures, driven by the deep forces of free improvisation, dub and electro.

Equipped with synthesizers, vocoders, analogue and electronic software and effects, as well as his unique ability to process sound material, he has worked on a variety of projects, including concert music, live music and/or soundtracks for dance, radio theatre, slam, poetry and film/video projects, as well as works for domed theatres and virtual reality.

His music has been heard at SÓNAR+D (Barcelona, ES), SAT-Société des arts technologiques (Montréal, QC), CKUT 90.3, CiBL 101.5 (Montréal, QC), and FIMAV-Festival International de Musique Actuelle (Victoriaville, QC). Recordings of his music have been released on labels including Cuneiform Records (USA), Audio Research Editions (UK), Mikroclimat (QC), Ambiances Magnétiques (QC), Atrito-Afeito (QC), UKsupersonic (UK) and VergilReality (AT/G.B./QC). Vergil collaborates regularly with the Ensemble SuperMusique, and has played with the Ensemble Innovarumori, the TIT-Troupe d'Improvisation Totale, the Orchestre Métropolitain, the Vienna Improvisers Orchestra, as well as many other artists in Quebec and internationally.
