Thomas Gauthier-Lang is a performing and improvising saxophonist driven by the search for the role of the saxophone in today's music, specifically in contemporary aesthetics. Fascinated by the chameleon-like nature of the saxophone, he develops a kaleidoscopic palette of sound through a mastery of extended techniques and growing experience in performing the new music repertoire.
His involvement in contemporary music involves questioning conformity and standards. As As an organizer, this perspective guides his programming choices, in which he thinks of spaces spaces conducive to the artistic and individual development of those involved. Based in Montreal, over the past few years, he has collaborated on the creation of more than thirty international works. At the same time, as a teacher for almost 10 years, he has been encouraging his students to become aware of their own expressive potential. expressive potential.
Thomas collaborates with a new generation of composers such as Alexandre David, Florence Tremblay, Salomé Perli, Romain Camiolo, Simon Bourget and Gabo Champagne, all exploring new projects. He is also a member of the Bakarlari soloist collective for their 2022-2023 season, and of the administrative team of the Laboratoire de musique contemporaine de Montréal. Most recently, he joined the pop, disco and funk group Crushhh and initiated the reed quintet 5ilience as artistic director.
Thomas holds a Master's degree in performance from the Université de Montréal under the direction of Jean-François Guay, with further studies at the Pôle Supérieur de Paris-Boulogne Billancourt in France with Jean-Michel Goury. His practice is influenced by the teachings of renowned saxophonists such as Marie-Bernadette Charrier, Pierre-Stéphane Meugé, Marcus Weiss, Louis-Philippe Bonin, Vincent Lê Quang and Jean-Marc Bouchard.
