ᐊᔅᒌ ᓃᒨ aschii niimuu (The Earth Dances) (2025)
Notes de programme
This piece is written for electric guitar quartet and a bass clarinet. The title of the work is reflective of my Cree culture and our traditional ability to hold spiritual communication with all things on this Earth. I often think of the Earth dancing as it orbits the sun. I have wondered what this celestial song must sound like. Is the song to which it sways too slow for us to hear? Does the Earth hum a tune too low for us to perceive? Does it dance to a cosmic voice singing a song in a literal and musical language that sounds to us like chaos? These questions, rhetorical as they may be, do not halt the dancing of the earth, and each year it takes another gliding spin across the heavenly ballroom floor with us held in its arms as unwitting partners. We look outward and watch as it dances its slow cycle, where everything it brings to death it rejuvenates with new life; all that we see done is also undone in an organic palindromic revolution.
