Karl-Erik Welin (1934-1992)
Welin received his musical education in Stockholm, with Ingvar Lidholm and Gunnar Bucht among his teachers, and in Darmstadt under David Tudor. He also performed both classical and avant-garde repertoire in virtuosic and expressive interpretations, both within and outside Europe (he is particularly famous for a happening at the Modern Museum in Stockholm in 1964 where he and composer Leo Nilsson attacked a piano with a chainsaw – during which he received a leg injury). Among his compositions are two operas, a requiem as well as many chamber music compositions.
