Concert
Judith Fliedl - Ultraviolin
Past event
Judith Fliedl is a violinist based in Vienna and is regarded as one of the most versatile Austrian violinists of her generation. Her artistic focus lies in the close interrelation of solo performance and chamber music, an exceptional breadth of repertoire—from classical literature to contemporary music—and artistic research. A multiple prizewinner of national and international competitions, she has established herself in recent years particularly in the field of contemporary music, both as a soloist and in a wide range of ensemble constellations.
The programme opens with Benedikt Alphart's Ultraviolin 1 (2026), a new work built from the ultrasonic frequencies of Judith Fliedl's own instrument. Recorded with specialized microphones and slowed down in the studio, the inaudible becomes audible: the electronic part is drawn entirely from the violin's hidden sonic spectrum, played back and transformed in real time alongside the live performance.
Chris Paul Harman's Partita for Solo Violin No. 1 (1995) and Malin Bång's …när korpen vitnar (2003) follow as works for solo violin. Bång's piece, written for the Hardanger fiddle and here performed on violin, takes its title from a fragment of a medieval Swedish folk ballad.
The concert closes with Kaija Saariaho's Frises (2011), a four-part work for violin and electronics composed in response to Bach's Chaconne. Each part draws on a different historical variation form - carillon, ground bass, passacaglia, chaconne - expanded through live electronics and pre-recorded material.
A concert presented with the support of the Austrian Embassy and the Austrian Cultural Forum.
