On Valentine's Day evening, the reed quintet 5ilience, from the Pôle Relève, will perform at the Gilles-Vigneault theater for its workshop performance at 7:30 PM. A great way to celebrate love with this ensemble embarking on its first multidisciplinary project titled 'Flore Temporelle.' This innovative concert combines audiovisual scenography, music from the reed quintet repertoire, including two new compositions, and the choreography of movement in space – all centered around our complex relationship with time.

The first reed quintet in Quebec introduces you to Flore Temporelle

The genesis of 'Flore Temporelle' traces back to the reading of 'Being Time - Case Studies in Musical Temporality,' co-authored by Richard Glover, Jennie Gottschalk, and Bryn Harrison. This essay profoundly influenced Thomas, the artistic director of 5ilience, by exploring the impact of musical parameters on the listener's bodily experience. The essay highlights the crucial role of memory and nostalgia in the perception of time in music, as well as the ability of music to evoke powerful emotional associations. The vision of 'Flore Temporelle' is based on creating a parallel universe where time follows different rules than those we know, drawing inspiration from worlds such as Ann Veronica Janssens' 'Yellowbluepink' (2015) and Olafur Eliasson's 'The Weather Project' (2003). In its final form, both the audience and performers will discover this ever-changing universe. The immersive experience of 'Flore Temporelle' offers a dive into an expansive world, existing on the fringes of our usual conception of time.

The program includes:

The first stage of the project, focused on research and exploration, was completed in the fall. Currently, the quintet is immersed in the actual creation phase. This residency will revolve around body awareness workshops, soundpainting sessions, and deep listening inspired by Pauline Oliveros, all aimed at deepening their communication on stage. Three pieces from 'Flore Temporelle' will be presented, including a new composition by Salomé Perli. This workshop performance also serves as an opportunity for them to invite the audience into their creative process through improvisation.

The composition of the team

To bring this project to life, 5ilience has assembled a talented team of collaborators. Audiovisual scenographers Myriam Boucher and Tristan Alantar, choreographer Stefania Skoryna, as well as composers Salomé Perli and Florence Tremblay, are contributing to the development of this innovative performance. The quintet consists of Léanne Teran-Paul on oboe, Thomas Gauthier-Lang on saxophone, Alex Eastley on bassoon, Gwénaëlle Ratouit on bass clarinet, and Mariane Pellerin on clarinet.

Discover them on Wednesday, February 14th, at the Gilles-Vigneault theater at 7:30 PM.

This workshop performance is made possible through the support and partnership of the Gilles-Vigneault theater and the CALQ (Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec).
