As part of La Semaine du Neuf (New Week), two master classes are offered that will allow you to discover musical creation processes and exchange with two internationally renowned composers.

These activities are presented in collaboration with the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal and the Vivier InterUniversitaire.

Master Class with Composer Annette Vande Gorne 

Space at the Heart of Acousmatic Music Research

Composer Annette Vande Gorne will discuss concepts related to space in acousmatic music research, with numerous examples from the general acousmatic repertoire and her own works.

Topics covered:

  • The 16 figures that allow for a spatial vocabulary
  • Multiphonic writing and its tools specific to Musiques & Recherches

Annette Vande Gorne

Annette Vande Gorne is a Belgian composer who has dedicated herself to electroacoustic and acousmatic music since 1980. She studied with important figures such as Pierre Schaeffer and has taught in several conservatories in Belgium. Her work explores the spatialization of sound, drawing inspiration from nature and the relationships between words and meaning. She has collaborated with various artists and has received numerous awards for her innovative compositions. Her music integrates elements of the European musical tradition while exploring new technologies and sound expressions.

Master Class with Composer Linda Catlin Smith

Composer Linda Catlin Smith will talk about how she approaches the art of composition. Several pieces will be examined to discuss material, process, aesthetics, and different ways to develop as a composer.

Linda Catlin Smith 

Linda Catlin Smith A composer born in New York and living in Toronto, Linda Catlin Smith is recognized for her works performed by prestigious ensembles such as BBC Proms and the Vancouver and Victoria symphony orchestras. Her recordings, including "Dark Flower" and "Nuages," have been critically acclaimed. She taught composition at Wilfrid Laurier University and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Victoria in 2023. Her work is available from Composers Edition and the Canadian Music Centre, and her work "Dark Flower" was recently nominated for a Juno Award.
