A Children's Opera Created by Montreal Students

The project L’ombre ailée et la licorne des mers (bulbe d’infini) (The Winged Shadow and the Unicorn of the Seas (Bulb of Infinity)) is a children's opera initiated by artists Maxime Daigneault and Véronique Girard in collaboration with Grade 5 students from Barclay School (Parc-Extension, Montreal). The objective is to involve the children in the complete creative process of an opera, and not just in its performance.

Through workshops focused on the exploration of voice, body, movement, staging, and sound, the students participate in all stages of the production. This project benefits from the support of three Grade 5 teachers and aims to develop the participants' imagination while providing them with adapted creative tools. The involvement of the school team is essential for the realization of this large-scale project.

Over several weeks, the students discover contemporary opera through musical and scenic experimentation workshops. Accompanied by the artists, they work on stage presence, movement, voice, and imagination. This is the third children's opera creation by Daigneault and Girard. Le Vivier, a broadcaster specializing in new music, supports the public dissemination of the work. The project aims to strengthen the children's confidence, listening skills, and expression through a collective artistic experience.

The public presentation will take place at Patro Villeray on May 28th.
