Call for Applications – Residency for New Music

Québec - Dresden (Hellerau) Exchange

The Goethe-Institut Montreal, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ), and Le Vivier – Carrefour des musiques nouvelles are partnering with MUTEK to offer a composer based in Germany an eight-week residency in Montreal.

This residency aims to support research, experimentation, and the development of innovative practices in new music and spatial sound design, while fostering lasting artistic exchanges between Quebec and Germany.

Within the framework of this exchange, a Québécois artist composer will reside two months at HELLERAU – Europäisches Zentrum der Künste Dresden.

Goals of the residency

This residency offers the selected artist a setting conducive to creation, research, and the development of their artistic practice in a new cultural environment.

The program’s objectives are:
●    to promote exchanges between the music scenes in Quebec and Germany;
●    to encourage artistic dialogue and international collaborations;
●    to support experimentation in acousmatic, mixed, and electronic music, as well as in spatial sound design;
●    to help raise the profile of artists and promote their works to new audiences.

Candidate Profile

This residency is designed for composers based in Germany who have at least two years of artistic practice.

Applicants must have presented at least one work in a professional context recognized by their peers (concert, festival, specialized venue, installation, performance, etc.).

Particular attention will be given to artistic approaches that are:
●    innovative and experimental;
●    open to collaboration;
●    related to digital practices involving sound and the soundscape.

Le Vivier – Carrefour des musiques nouvelles
Le Vivier is a specialized promoter dedicated to new music, bringing together more than 60 Quebec-based ensembles and musical organizations. Its mission is to support the development of new music and to promote public access to significant works of contemporary composition.

MUTEK
MUTEK is an international organization dedicated to promoting and developing contemporary digital, electronic, and audiovisual art practices. Recognized worldwide, the organization fosters exchanges between artists, technologies, and audiences through events, residencies, and research-creation initiatives.

HELLERAU – Europäisches Zentrum der Künste Dresden
HELLERAU is a European arts center renowned for its commitment to contemporary, interdisciplinary, and experimental artistic practices. Located in Dresden, it welcomes artists from around the world each year for residencies and creative projects.

Duration of stay

The residency will take place in Montreal from August 11 to October 5, 2027, and will last eight weeks.
Depending on the project’s progress and the artistic program, the artist may have the opportunity to present a work.

Support Offered

The residency includes:
●    international travel expenses;
●    accommodations in Montreal;
●    a living allowance of 3,000 CAD.

Artistic and professional support will also be provided by the program's partners.

Deadline for Application

Applications must be submitted no later than October 31, 2026, and must be filed through the Goethe-Institut's application portal GAP
