Seventeen Miyagi Haikus (2011)
Program notes
Dedicated to the victims of the triple disasters in Japan in March 2011.
These Miyagi Haikus draw inspiration from the traditional form of Japanese short poems: three lines with five, seven, and five syllables. The final line often synthesizes the first two. Here, it's the measures that engage in the same play: the first five measures present a musical idea, the next seven measures present another, and the final five measures combine them. The series of 17 short compositions is also organized following the haiku format: the first five have pitches noted without a specific rhythm, the next seven include rhythms but without determined pitches, and the final five combine both rhythm and precise pitch notation. The score includes clear instructions on how to co-create this music while allowing the musicians significant freedom in its realization. Throughout the evening, several of these short haikus will be interspersed among other works in the program, serving as poetic interludes.
