Musical works

Julius Eastman composed in a style he called "organic music”. He described this style as undulating, repetitive, and mainly additive. His one-page score, Buddha (1984), allows much freedom. It has twenty stacked staves framed in an egg shape. No bar lines, no set instrumentation, and no audio recording from the composer's lifetime. Emmanuel Lacopo arranged and recorded four versions of the work for the album "Eastman," released by People Places Records in 2023. In Buddha v.1., the notes on the staves are compiled into respective harmonies to form a tape accompaniment, and the electric guitar functions as the solo instrument. Buddha v.2 is a 2-minute solo condensed version of Buddha v.1, with the guitar performing the chords alongside granular delay and reverb processing.
