Andrea Stewart - Entre tes mains

Andrea Stewart - Programme pour violoncelle solo
Andrea Stewart - Programme pour violoncelle solo
How can we reconcile the perhaps diametric ideas of solo and collaborative practice? Considering relationships and interactions from a micro, intricate level altered cellist Andrea Stewart’s vision of collaboration, participation, and the idea of sharing. Moving away from a virtuosic intention seemed to make room for the abstract, changing her perception of what it is to be onstage with a cello alone.

In the construction of this programme, Andrea was influenced by relationships to/between people, to sounds, and to the outside world, and how these are affected by shared experiences: the interaction between a cellist and her voice, temporal pause and resonance, or fragile harmonics and the listener’s breath.

This is a deeply personal programme for solo cello based around the ecology of a moment, an invitation to listen more attentively to the fragility or fullness found in a small series of details. The music embodies these ideas and influences, and encourages these reflections.

In her own words, Cassandra Miller’s Daylonging, Slacktide “is a piece about longing to reconnect with others, and about the experience of time holding still, endless hours without signposts.” Errolyn Wallen and John Luther Adams both pay homage to moments in time in significant friendships.

Caroline Shaw’s In Manus Tuas is a spiritual, secular piece that transcends eras, inspired by a moment in time listening to a Tallis motet.

In One Equal Night, Vijay Iyer is inspired by the equinox: “each segment [finds] its own balance of light and darkness, inner and outer, or high and low.” Sofia Gubaidulina plays with the creation of consonance and dissonance through non-harmonic expressive parameters, while Nicole Lizée looks for new experiences within embedded voices of tradition.
