International encounters

Alone on stage, the performer Philippe Spiesser plays invisible percussion instruments. With his hands, his body, his gestures, he sculpts sounds and images and invites the audience to an exploration of gesture in music as an instrument. Thanks to various sensor devices and computer vision algorithms, the body is transformed into an instrument. A technical and scenic performance that projects us into the world of virtual reality.

The percussionist Philippe Spiesser is at the centre of a multimedia device using Kinect and Arduino sensors (pyroelectric infrared movement sensor). This project, called GeKiPe for "GEste, KInect and Percussion", was developed at the Haute école de musique de Genève, in partnership with the IRCAM Centre Pompidou in Paris. The programme includes two pieces: Hypersphere by José-Miguel Fernandez and Le Silence by Alexander Vert. The digital environment is a creation of the visual artist Thomas Köppel.
