States of Intermeshing (2025)

Program notes

In recent years, my interest in elements surrounding eschatological forces has deepened. By examining the historical and social roots of such movements, one quickly sees the undeniable links between the foundations of global colonization and the capitalist world as we know it today, and apocalyptic discourses. These narratives have continuously—and still—disadvantaged marginalized communities, particularly Afro-diasporic ones. States of Intermeshing, viii. what is past is prologue thus explores the intrinsic relationship between the dehumanization of Black communities and apocalyptic rhetoric aimed at perpetual resource extraction and the pursuit of postcolonial liberation. In this piece, I pay tribute to soul and R&B music, briefly introduce words from Achille Mbembé, a Congolese philosopher engaged with decolonization, and unfold postcolonial liberation movements through sonic cells entrusted to the performers on stage. All of this coalesces into a sonic multiplicity—an essential element of my artistic practice.
