Thomas Gauthier-Lang is a saxophone performer and improviser driven by the search for the role of the saxophone in today's music, specifically in the contemporary aesthetic. He develops a sound palette that pushes the limits of the saxophone through a mastery of extended techniques and a growing experience in the interpretation of new music repertoire. His involvement in contemporary music involves questioning conformity and norms. As an organizer, this perspective guides his programming choices, in which he thinks of spaces conducive to the artistic and individual development of the people involved. Based in Montreal, he has collaborated for several years in the creation of more than fifteen works internationally. At the same time, he has been encouraging his students to become aware of their own expressive potential for nearly 10 years. Thomas collaborates with a new generation of composers such as Alexandre David, Romain Camiolo, Simon Bourget and Gabo Champagne, all exploring new projects. He is also part of the Bakarlari soloist collective as a musician for their 2022-2023 season and of the administrative team of the Laboratoire de musique contemporaine de Montréal. Most recently, he joined the group Crushhh, a group at the crossroads of pop, disco and funk. Thomas holds a master's degree in performance from the University of Montreal under the direction of Jean-François Guay with further training from the Pôle Supérieur de Paris-Boulogne Billancourt in France with Jean-Michel Goury. His practice is influenced by the teachings of renowned saxophonists such as Marie-Bernadette Charrier, Pierre-Stéphane Meugé, Marcus Weiss, Louis-Philippe Bonin, Vincent Lê Quang and Jean-Marc Bouchard.
