Klaus Janek practices composition and performance on double bass and with his real-time electronic setup, seeking a balance between aesthetics and discourse. He participates in concerts and festivals across Europe, the United States, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, Russia, China, Malaysia, Brazil, and Rwanda, as well as projects in dance, theater, sound art, and radio art, in addition to releasing albums.
He is a founding member of Sounding Situations, a member of Sandeep Bhagwati's Sabdagatitara Network, and a regular collaborator with Meg Stuart/Damaged Goods and matthaei&konsorten. Contracts and commissions have led him to perform at venues such as the Louvre, Berghain, transmediale, Transart, Nuit Blanche (Montreal, Tel Aviv), Impulstanz Vienna, Vision Festival NYC, Merzmusik, Gropius Bau, HKW, and arte Concert. He lectures at universities worldwide. He has been an artist in residence in Brazil (Vila Sul), Belgium (Q-02), Israel (Musrara Art School), and New York. He is a grantee of the Robert Bosch Stiftung and Musikfonds, the German Music Council, KSB, Kulturaustausch Berlin, and Kulturamt Bozen. He also won the "Music Theatre Now 2018" competition. He performs with various artists, including Bill Dixon, Valerio Tricoli, Cristian Vogel, Yan Jun, Clayton Thomas, Brendan Dougherty, Biliana Voutchkova, Ulrich Müller, Peter Kowald, Ingo Reulecke, Meg Stuart, Thierry Niang/Patrice Chéreau, Nils "Storm" Robitzky, and Keith Hennessy.
