A classically-trained violist, Jean René spent six years in Italy (opera and symphony orchestras).On his return to Canada, he studied composition at the Université de Montréal and conducting at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal. Viola soloist with the Orchestre Métropolitain from 1992 to 2002, he has also freelanced with numerous orchestras and chamber music groups. He has also appeared on stage in dance (Bataille, Ani*mâles, Treize lunes and Les Chemins de traverse) and theater (Zulù Time, La nuit des Rois, The Busker's Opera, La cerisaie). At the same time, he has continued to collaborate, on stage and in the studio, on projects involving exploratory music and improvisation for film, theater and dance.

He has been a member of the Ratchet Orchestra since 1997 and is a founding member of the Quatuor d'occasion, an ensemble dedicated to improvisation for over ten years. Jean René released a solo album (fammi, 2010) and a duo album with Italian bassist bassist Tommaso Rolando (Do. So, 2018). These projects have given him numerous concert opportunities in Quebec and Europe.
