Upstream Music Association

Producer / Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Lukas Pearse, artistic director

Upstream was founded in 1990 by a group of composer/performers consciously seeking a path beyond the false duality of a classical-vs.-jazz vision of art music. Over the years, and largely under the directorship of past Artistic Director Paul Cram, Upstream has both been a presenter and producer of pan-genre new music. With the new direction being forged by current Artistic Director Lukas Pearse, Upstream aims to both expand its capacity as a presenter as well as more intensively cultivate relationships with composer/performers through collaborations with our Ensemble, and through our Open Waters Festival of New and Improvised Music. This festival aims both to promote Atlantic Canadian artists to invited presenters and journalists, as well as to feature national and international artists to provide cultural context and innovative music for our audiences.
