LISTEN TO THE UNEXPECTED

30 EVENTS AND JUST AS MANY OPPORTUNITIES
TO PLUNGE INTO THE WORLD OF NEW MUSIC

Montreal, December 1, 2022 – Le Vivier is thrilled to reveal its winter-spring 2023 season. While new music always means plurality, this is especially true at Le Vivier, where the diversity of artists and artistic offerings are the strength of its programming.

This season by Jeffrey Stonehouse has so much to offer, truly an invitation to the unexpected!

“With this season, I want us join together to celebrate major contemporary repertoire from here and discover the repertoire of tomorrow. With the presence of guest artists Alla Zagaykevych and An Laurence 安媛, Le Vivier remains connected to current events and new trends by fostering/valuing freedom of expression. The curious and enthusiasts alike can let themselves be astonished by a wealth of rich, unprecedented experiences.”

- Jeffrey Stonehouse, Artistic director at Le Vivier

// MORE THAN 30 ECLECTIC CONCERTS

To mark the start of a season with over 30 eclectic events, the young Bakarlari ensemble presents Ritratto, thus setting the tone for the season: focussed on creation and new experiences, bursting with emotion, and fully engaged. To continue this trend, the 7th edition of Le Vivier InterUniversitaire concert spotlights unusual, innovative works of the emerging generation of performers and composers from Montreal’s various universities.

// LA SEMAINE DU NEUF

On the heels of the successful international week of Résonance Croisée, Le Vivier keeps up the momentum and launches the first edition of La Semaine du Neuf. A highlight of the season, this nod to the “Événements du neuf” opens with a program conducted by its founder, Lorraine Vaillancourt, and performed by Flemish guest soprano Katrien Baerts and the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (March 7). This event pays tribute to Claude Vivier, now considered Quebec’s greatest composer. Jubilant and terrible, incantatory and explosive, his profound music fascinates and moves deeply.

// GUEST CURATORS, NEW PERSPECTIVES

The artistic residency of Ukrainian composer Alla Zagaykevych continues with the presentation of two premieres commissioned by Le Vivier. The first work will be performed during a portrait concert presented in collaboration with Chants Libres, Productions SuperMusique, and Quasar (February 8), while the second, for large ensemble, will be premiered by the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne in the spring (May 5).

Le Vivier also welcomes performance and multimedia artist An Laurence 安媛, whose work revolves around memory and identity. With her carte blanche, she is proposing Do you have a minute?, which fuses contemporary music creation, the theatrical experience, and relational art to offer an interpretation of time.

// OUT-OF-THE-ORDINARY EXPERIENCES...

All season long, Le Vivier offers unique events that are off the beaten track. The Montreal Botanical Garden opens its doors to the sixteen musicians of the SuperMusique ensemble to perform Scott Thomson’s work in situ, Arborientation. Later, with Intentions fragmentaires, Tim Brady’s music is paired with the captivating images of photographer Catherine Marcogliese and choreography by Charles Brécard. Aussi, Folk Noir, invites audiences to immerse themselves in the dazzling musical world of Montreal composer Nicole Lizée in an electrifying performance by Collectif9. Last, with Perpétuité, Architek Percussion explores the concept of eternity with two international premieres for voice and percussion.

// FAMILY EVENTS

There are also performances and cultural mediation activities for families to enjoy together, to explore musical creation in a playful way! A fun, poetic worlds awaits little ones with Paramirabo’s Pythagora's toolkits (spring break) in collaboration with Bach Before Bedtime and the Festival de Casteliers.

Families can also see the Festival Casteliers 2022’s well-received opening show again: Innamorati by Quatuor Bozzini (April). Archipel aux mille sons by Sixtrum will also be on tour.
