Kiya Tabassian, artistic director.
Founded in Montréal in 1998 by Kiya Tabassian and Ziya Tabassian, Constantinople draws inspiration from the music of the Mediterranean, Medieval and Renaissance Europe, and Middle-Eastern musical traditions.
The ensemble provides a forum for the cross-fertilization of various musical cultures, both within the ensemble itself and with its guest artists. Constantinople brings these cultures together through a unique mode of musical expression that has grown out of extensive research into the history and aesthetics of the musical traditions into which it delves, combined with freshness and creativity.
For the past seven years, the ensemble has produced an annual season in of 3 to 4 events in Montréal. Many of these concerts have been broadcast on the CBC/Radio-Canada radio network.
Winners of the 2003 Prix Opus for discovery of the year, Constantinople served as ensemble in residence at Radio-Canada in 2004-2005.
Constantinople has released 10 recordings under Atma label.
