Since his arrival in Montreal in 2010, Andrew Gray has rapidly established himself in the region’s choral scene as an experienced trainer and conductor. Already Artistic Director of the Chœur des enfants de Montréal and of the choral project Sing Montréal Chante, Assistant Conductor at the Church of St. Andrew & St. Paul and General Manager of the St. Lawrence Choir, he took up the position of Artistic Director of both the Montreal Choral Institute and its in-house ensemble Voces Boreales on July 1st, 2015; he has also recently been appointed Musical and Artistic Director of Les Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal and will assume that position starting next August.

In recent years, Mr. Gray has prepared choirs for such noted conductors as Kent Nagano, Zubin Mehta, Karl Jenkins, Joby Talbot, Gregory Charles, Iwan Edwards, Jordan de Souza, Jean-Pascal Hamelin, Robert Ingari, Alain Trudel and Stéphane Laforest, as well as for the show Distant Worlds. He has directed vocal ensembles for The Tenors, Cœur de pirate, Les Trois Accords, The Beach Boys, Nikki Yanofsky, Marie-Mai and Sarah McLachlan.

Andrew Gray’s choral pedigree and musical training extend over three decades. Starting out as a chorister at Durham Cathedral, in the United Kingdom, he went on to join the internationally acclaimed a cappella group The Swingle Singers, with whom he toured around the world. He has had the occasion to work with Luciano Berio on performances of his opera Outis at La Scala in Milan and the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. As a performer of contemporary repertoire he has sung under conductors Pierre Boulez, Yan-Pascal Tortelier, David Roberston, David Zinman and Arturo Tamayo. He has also worked with some of Montreal’s finest professional choral ensembles, including the Theatre of Early Music, the Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal, VivaVoce and… Voces Boreales.

Mr. Gray has performed on numerous movie soundtracks and has either performed, toured or recorded with a number of internationally renowned popular artists, including Jarvis Cocker, Russell Watson, Roch Voisine, Garou and Chris de Burgh. He has also led choral workshops and master classes with several groups around the world.
