Nour Symon's artistic practice is rooted in the interplay between three primary axes: concert music, visual arts, and poetry. This transdisciplinary approach is particularly evident in their sound paintings—graphical scores, both instrumental and performative, interpreted by musicians and artists with diverse backgrounds.
Their first poetry collection, son corps parlait pour ne pas mourir, and their first book of graphic scores, voir dans le vent qui hurle les étoiles rire, et rire, were both published in 2016 by Éditions de la Tournure. The poetry-sound collection L’amour des oiseaux moches (Noroît, 2020) was a finalist for the Governor General's Literary Awards and the Émile-Nelligan Prize.
Since 2008, Nour Symon has been the artistic and musical director of numerous projects, both solo and collaborative. A frequent collaborator is the ensemble SuperMusique, which has created and recorded their two most significant graphic scores—je suis calme et enragé·e (2022, album forthcoming) and voir dans le vent qui hurle les étoiles rire, et rire (l’un·e sans l’autre) (2016-18, album 2020). Nour Symon is also an accomplished free improv pianist who has performed worldwide with remarkable musicians.
Their visual work has been exhibited at Usine C, Charpente des fauves (Quebec City), Maison de la culture du Plateau-Mont-Royal, Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur, and Palazzo Ducale di Lucca. Nour is currently working on the final version of their opera adaptation of Nicole Brossard's novel Le désert mauve. Preliminary versions have been presented in cities such as Stockholm, Calgary, Montreal, Quebec City, Jonquière, Edmonton, and Oulu (Finland).
