Yon Chekhanovich immigrated from Jerusalem to Montreal as a child, where he pursued a musical education focusing on piano performance. He returned to his native country to complete his high school studies at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. He was then recruited for three years into Israel's compulsory military service. Before returning to Montreal, Yon traveled around the world for a year, and it was primarily in India that he was inspired to dedicate his life to music.
Yon has written for a wide variety of ensembles, with recent projects focusing on the inclusion of non-Western instruments and electronic music. He draws on his experiences to create and encourage environmental and social consciousness, bringing his art, both conceptually and practically, to efforts of activism. Yon currently resides in Montreal where he is pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Music Composition and Anthropology at McGill University. His latest projects involve alleviating injustices in the community by offering improvised music sessions at a shelter for the homeless and organizing charity events for various relief causes.
