Early studies of oboe, violin, piano; first compositions at the age of 12. Composition studies with Werner Heider in Nuremberg, and pianist in Heider’s Ars nova ensemble, 1968-70. Briefly attended Mauricio Kagel’s New Music Courses in Cologne. Studied simultaneously at the Institute for Sonology (Utrecht) and the Jaap-Kunst Ethnology Centre (Amsterdam) 1970-73. Computer studies in Hamilton USA, 1974; ethnological research, gathering folk music, especially from Native American reservations, 1975-76. Founded Beginner Studio in Cologne 1977; organised concert series there untill 1984. From 1982, composition teacher at the Liège Conservatoire. Taught at Darmstadt Summer Courses (1982-84), at the Royal Conservatoire Den Haag (1988). From 1990, composition teacher in Karlsruhe, visiting professor at Folkwangshochschule (1992-93). From 1993 Professor of Composition at Berlin Academy of the Arts.
