Raymond Gervais
Raymond Gervais is an artist active since the mid 70’s, working often from sound or music, doing installations and performances, sometimes with musicians (such as Robert Lepage, Yves Bouliane, John Heward, Malcolm Goldstein…). He also worked many years for Radio Canada, the jazz programs on week-end. Gervais composed an homage to Pierre Mercure and Claude Gauvreau in 1990, in the guise of an imaginary record, an album jacket with extensive liner notes, establishing also a link with the festival New Music America. Then in 1991, he organized an afternoon of performances at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, celebrating Borduas’ Refus global in music (including Robert Lepage performing “Automatisme pour Pierre Mercure”). Finally, he published a text on Pierre Mercure’s close relationship to the visual arts entitled: “Kaléidoscope pour Pierre Mercure” (in Nicole Gingras, S:ON, Le son dans l’art contemporain canadien, éditions Artextes, 2003). His “Theatre of Sound” was shown at La Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur in 1997. A book of conversations with the artist has been published in 2007: “Puisqu’à toute fin correspond”, Éditions Nicole Gingras, Montréal.
