Julius Eastman was born on October 27, 1940 in New York and died on May 28, 1990 in Buffalo. He is an African-American composer, pianist, singer and dancer of the minimalist movement. He was one of the first musicians to combine elements of pop music with minimalist music. The titles of his works often have a politically provocative aspect such as Evil Nigger or Gay Guerilla. He died in destitution and indifference in 1990, many of his scores disappeared. It is only in the course of the years 2010 that his work is rediscovered.
