An accomplished musician, composer, performer, instrumentalist (he plays several instruments), and improviser, he has been trained in almost every schools. His experiments and experimentation with Montréalers René Lussier and Pierre Tanguay, his collaborations with Europeans Fred Frith and Lars Holmer, his concepts of improvisation, and his research into tone and texture have gained his artistry recognition and acclaim. His desire to return music to its rightful place at the heart of theater, dance, and cinema have seen him collaborate with Denis Marleau, Jacques Leduc, Tahanni Rached, Claude Poissant, John Walker, Louise Bédard, Daniel Soulières, and Ginette Laurin. Jean Derome is a co-founder of the Ambiances Magnétiques recording label; he received the Freddie Stone Award in 1992.
