Pierre Mercure (1927-1966) Study Day
From Refus global to Total Art
A composer and television director, Pierre Mercure has left his stamp on Quebec’s creative music, with originality and perspicacity, as early as the late 1940s. This study day will be an opportunity to raise the awareness about Pierre Mercure and his works, and to discuss his place in Quebec’s musical, artistic and cultural history. The major part he played from 1948 to 1965 and his collaborations with some of the artists who signed or were close to the Refus global manifesto will serve as a springboard for questions concerning his career, the context in which he worked, and the interdisciplinarity prevailing in his œuvre. Come hear artists, composers, art historians, musicians, and musicologists present the fruits of their research work on Mercure.

Evolution of New Music in Quebec: Education, Financing, Outreach, and Major Artistic Currents
The Fédération des associations de musiciens éducateurs du Québec partners with these Professional Meetings to present the evolution of music education in Quebec and the role creative music plays in it. This will be followed by Le Vivier’s study on the material conditions of operation, financing, and outreach of the new music community since 1961. Then, the epic tale L’Histoire des musiques nouvelles au Québec [A History of New Music in Quebec] will tell us about the major artistic trends in our new music and help us better understand how each current fits in the new music mosaic. Finally, a panel discussion with creators and performers will look for future orientations.
New Music Interpretation Centre (NMIC)
Le Vivier launches the prototype of its brand new virtual and portable New Music Interpretation Centre (NMIC) : four multimedia presentations for Le Vivier members and the three major families of creative music: scored music, digital music, and improvised music.

Perspectives (1/2)
Arts council representatives from our three levels of government will discuss the future of new music. Two network experiences will be told: the European network Centres culturels de rencontres started in France, and the ON network for new music started in Cologne. Le Vivier will present its 2011-14 strategic plan for the development of new music. Finally, a plenary session will try to find answers to three major questions related to the development of new music in Quebec.
In the evening, 30 musicians from the four corners of Montréal’s contemporary scene will join talents to present a unique performance of John Cage’s famous Atlas Eclipticalis, premiered in Montréal by the composer 50 years ago. Commissioned to this monument of American music by Québécois composer Pierre Mercure, this work (for 1 to 86 instruments) is a literal transcription of star constellations—magnificently organized chaos out of which arises meditative music in perpetual renewal.
